Filing of income tax return

04 April 2013 My daughter who had been working for IBM till June 12 had resigned and been studying MBA in Kharagpur. She filed her ITR-I for the assessment year 2012-13 as she had received salary for 3 months. Now she has no income in any manner. Is it necessary she has to file 'zero' return for the assessment hear 2013-14 or she has to write a letter to IT department and if so to whom?

04 April 2013 Dear Ramanujam,

First of all Assessment Year 2012-13 means you are declaring income earned in the Financial year from 01.04.2011 to 31.03.2012. so If your daughter has worked in the entire above mentioned period and has earned salary which is more than 190000, then yes, she need to file return of Assessment Year 2012-13.

In respect of Assessment Year 2013-14 which means income earned in the period 01.04.2012 to 31.03.2013, your daughter has earned salary of 3 months and if the total income of your daughter is less than Rs. 200000 then there is no obligation to file Income tax return. No need to write any letter to Income tax deptt.
