2. how is it calculated?

Exgratia means a favor and not compelled by legal.When something has been given by employer as ex gratia, it has been done voluntarily, out of kindness or grace.
Generally at the time of festival or marraige of employee, the employer give some amount to employee as an exgratia.
There is no calculation. It depends on the whimps of the employer it can be any amount it may also vary from one employee to another employee.
It is taxable in the hands of the employee.
