fOR JULY 2014 RETURN, 10 AUGUST WAS SUNDAY. SO, THE RETURN COULD BE FILED ON 11 AUGUST, 2014. SO, IS THE PENALTY APPLICABLE FOR DELAY RETURN?

there is no penalty in this case as the return is filed belatedly filed within time limit as per sec 139(4).

Question over here is for Excise return and not Income Tax Return.
Dear Abhijit to the best of my knowledge the due date will be 10th only even if the 10th falls on a Sunday. Still wait for view of other experts.

Sorry for taking it as income tax querry and yes the due date as said by expert is correct will be 10th only irrespective of sunday.

Thanks for reply. so, 11th day will not be considered for due date in case of Sunday or other holiday.
