For CA Final May 2016 attempt, you had the option to appear under either the Old Syllabus or the New Syllabus since ICAI allowed both for that cycle.

If you had already registered under the Old Syllabus, you could switch to New Syllabus by applying to ICAI before the last date for registration.
You needed to submit a request or application to ICAI to switch, following their instructions.
