Now that affixation of digital signature has been made mandatory for those covered under 44AB, can the digital signature certificate being used for signing company documents be used for signing I.T returns in the event of the director being the proprietor of an organization which is covered under 44AB.

yes it can be used for that.

Digital Signature is identity of individual person.
Therefore a person can use his digital signature wherever he can sign physically.
It means only signle digital signature of a person can be used for all ITR of his individual, Firm in which he is partner, company in which he is a Director
