Choosing principal for article ship

21 August 2013 I have passed my B.com & IPCC Group 1 and am appearing for Group 2 in Nov'13. I want to do article ship and want to know how to choose a principal where i will be able to learn and get experience which will help in future. I have got lot of suggestions from students and i am confused. Please suggest tips on how to choose a principal. Type of firm to choose-Audit or tax consultant , distance form home to save time for studies,Big 4,mid sized or CA with individual practice,.etc.

22 August 2013 Use these filters to shortlist where you should apply:

1. Distance from home is v important. You must factor this
2. What is your aim - practice, work in industry, start a business? Based on that you can make a choice
a> Unsure about specialisation - tax, audit, etc. Join a mid size firm where you would get exposure to difference aspects. But better to focus on audit. To transition back from tax to another area is more challenging.
b> Individual practice / Business - join an individual / small sized reputed firm. Talk to past articles from such firms to determine how much you can learn. The ability of the individual to mentor you is critical
c> Industry - join big 4. You could also remain with the big 4 in a job. In this situation, you would perhaps have to specialise early on.
