For Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27, delays in income tax refunds usually stem from a handful of core issues. On the positive side, if your return is accurate and error-free, processing can be relatively fast; some taxpayers have reported receiving refunds in as little as 7 to 10 days. That said, even small mistakes or missing information can cause considerable hold-ups.
Common Reasons for Refund Delays
Mismatch in AIS, Form 26AS, or TDS Certificates
Discrepancies between your ITR and the data in your AIS, Form 26AS, or TDS certificates - whether related to salary, interest, dividends, capital gains, TDS, or advance tax - can trigger reconciliation reviews. Claims for TDS that do not appear in Form 26AS are a particularly common cause of hold-ups.

ITR Not E-Verified
Filing the return is only the first step. Unless the ITR is e-verified within the stipulated timeframe, the processing and refund issuance cannot commence.
Incorrect or Unvalidated Bank Account
Refund credits can fail or get stuck if:
- The bank account is not pre-validated on the portal.
- The account is closed or inactive.
- The IFSC code or account number is entered incorrectly.
- The name on the bank account does not match PAN records.
- No valid Indian bank account is linked to your e-filing profile.
PAN–Aadhaar Issue
If your PAN becomes inoperative due to non-linking with Aadhaar, your refund and any associated interest may be put on hold under Section 139AA(2) read with Rule 114AAA.
Outstanding Tax Demand from an Earlier Year
The Department may set off your current refund against any outstanding demand from previous years, as per the applicable provisions, including Section 245. If no response is filed to an outstanding demand notice, it may be confirmed and adjusted against your refund.
High Refund Claim or Complex Return
Returns that involve large refund amounts, capital gains, multiple income sources, foreign assets, high-value deductions, or significant tax-credit claims may be subject to additional automated or manual verification.
Deduction Mismatch with Employer-Reported Information
For salaried individuals, claiming deductions such as HRA, Section 80C, or Section 80D in the ITR, even when these were not declared to the employer for TDS calculation, can lead to further scrutiny or adjustments in the intimation.
Defective Return, Wrong ITR Form, or Incorrect Particulars
Filing an unsuitable ITR form, omitting any income source, reporting an incorrect residential status, or entering inconsistent details can delay processing or result in a notice from the Department.
Departmental Processing Backlog
High volumes of filings, particularly around the deadline, combined with stricter data validation checks, can cause general delays at the CPC, even when the return itself has no apparent errors.
Clarification or Response Pending
Refunds may not be released until the taxpayer responds to an intimation, discrepancy alert, outstanding demand notice, or other communication on the portal. The Department's discrepancy-alert process may require taxpayers to either accept a variation or file a revised or updated return.
What You Can Do?
- Check Your Refund Status: Log in to the official Income Tax e-filing portal and check the status of your processed return for AY 2026-27.
- Respond to Notices: The department may send intimations or notices regarding discrepancies. It is crucial to respond to these promptly to avoid further delays. Ignoring them could even lead to your return being invalidated.
- Correct Bank Details: If your refund failed due to a bank account issue, you will need to pre-validate the correct account on the portal and submit a "Refund Reissue Request".
How to Check and Resolve the Delay?
- Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal to view your recent notices and overall filing status.
- Navigate to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns to confirm your e-verification is complete.
- Check the AIS and Form 26AS tabs to see if any financial data or TDS entries were left out or misreported.
- Go to My Profile > Pre-validate Bank Account to ensure the designated refund account is active and correctly linked.
If the refund shows “Failed”
Add or correct the bank account under My Profile → My Bank Account, validate it, and then go to Services → Refund Reissue to submit a reissue request. The Income Tax Department’s refund-reissue process requires a filed return with refund failure and a validated bank account.
Interest on Delayed Refund
Where applicable, interest on an eligible refund is generally governed by Section 244A. However, the exact period and amount depend on factors such as the type of tax paid, the date of filing, the date of processing, and whether the delay is attributable to the taxpayer. Therefore, the refund computation in the intimation under Section 143(1) should be examined rather than assuming that interest will automatically cover the entire waiting period.
