2. KYC and Government Facility
Know Your Customer (KYC) is the process through which banks verify a customer's identity and address.
If your KYC is incomplete or overdue, bank may stop transactions or incoming payments, and recommends completing periodic updates when due.
How Often Should You Update Your KYC?
Every bank account holder does not have to complete KYC every year. KYC updates depends generally on the customer's risk classification:
| Customer Risk Category | KYC Frequency |
| High-Risk | At least once every 2 years |
| Medium-Risk | At least once every 8 years |
| Low-Risk | At least once every 10 years |
Senior citizens may find it difficult to visit a bank branch frequently. They may complete KYC from home through:
- Video Based Service
- Doorstep Banking (you must check whether the bank offers facilities)
Check Aadhaar and DBT Linkage for Government Benefits
If you receive any government payments such as pension, scholarship, subsidy or other Benefit, then you must link Aadhaar to the bank account and the account should be linked for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) through the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) payment system, so government funds can be routed to the account.
3. Update Nominee Details
Many people open savings accounts, fixed deposits and recurring deposits but do not update nominee. If you do not add nominee details, it can create additional difficulties for family members when they need to claim the money after the account holder's death.
Therefore, every account holder should check whether a nominee has been registered and whether the nominee's details are correct.
Multiple Nominee Options
Now you can may nominate up to four persons, either simultaneously or successively, thereby simplifying claim settlement for depositors and their nominees. under Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Simultaneous Nomination
Depositors can divide their deposit amount among up to four nominees by specifying each person's share. The total share must equal 100%.
For Example - For ₹10 Lakh Bank FD.
| Nominee | Share | Amount (₹) |
| Mother | 40% | 400000 |
| Son | 30% | 300000 |
| Daughter | 20% | 200000 |
| Sister | 10% | 100000 |
| Total | 100% | 1000000 |
Successive Nomination
Account holder can name up to four nominees in order. If the first nominee dies, the second nominee becomes eligible, followed by the next nominees in the specified order.
Here, successive nomination is not the same as dividing the deposit into four percentage shares. It establishes an order of priority.
What Happens If There Is No Nominee?
If a bank account holder dies without registering a nominee, family members may need to complete additional formalities to claim the money.
Depending on the bank's rules and the circumstances, the bank may ask for additional documents such as:
- Death certificate of the account holder
- Identity proof of the claimant
- Claim application and declarations
- Legal heir certificate or succession certificate, wherever required
- Indemnity bond or declaration
- Other supporting documents requested by the bank
Therefore, registering a nominee and keeping the information updated can help reduce difficulties for family members.
