Sans pareil way to improve memory

Hi All,

As I delve into my CA final preparations, I have realised the pragmatic part of the the theory always said by me - Revision is the most terrific and Sans Pareil way to improve memory.

So exams are nearing in, and everybody is doing their best to be the best. But we are still asking the same question to ourselves - Have I done the best of my studies so far? Will I clear my exams? etc

(REMEMBER: REVISION IS THE MOST TERRIFIC AND SANS PAREIL WAY TO IMPROVE MEMORY)

I have been using an I-phone for a year now. Now you maybe obnoxiously asking, what has an iphone got to do with this topic. In fact I am thankful that I have been using an I-phone (a Smartphone). This is why. I had few songs on my phone and I used to listen to only those songs. I updated the songs and again I used to listen to only those updated songs. I know the songs by heart (almost all of them). Its alright if you have started hating me for not coming to the point (in fact I am coming to that in a moment). So fearing my failure in exams due to heavy dependency on a Smartphone and wasting my time on the same, I planned to switch over to a very basic Samsung phone. So now to pass my time I try and listen to radio on that. And this is where its all become so clear to me about memory.

I listen to radio and there are 10 channel/stations playing songs 24*7 . So when a song comes up this is what happens:

1) The songs that I know by heart are the ones which i can sing along very well, and know all the words very well,

2) The songs that I know partly, are sung by me partly, and I rejoice everytime I expect the known part to come up so that I can sing along, eg in the song lungi dance of chennai express movie, which I have heard just a couple of times, whenever lungii dance part comes up I sing only that part as the rest of the part is still unknown to me,

3) then there are many songs which I have not heard before or maybe once in my life and ignored because I didn't want to listen to the song that time.

Ok I can see the fury on your face now by not really knowing where this article is headed. So here it is then

The categories of songs are like our subjects or chapters,

1) The subjects/chapters which we have read before and we reading for second or third time or 4th or 5th time are the ones which we enjoy the most( as we have almost learnt them (unconsciously)

2) the subjects/chapters which we know partly are the ones which we rejoice everytime we see something in the text which we already know, coming up,

3) The subjects or the chapters which we shall start for the first time seem difficult.

And this is  the truth, that we go from Point 3  to point 2 and then to point 1 when we study.

(REMEMBER: REVISION IS THE TERRIFIC AND SANS PAREIL WAY TO IMPROVE MEMORY)

OUR REAL LIVES AND THE RELATION WITH REVISION.

In real life we read newspapers but still are unable to recall even those  news which are important to us. So we read them once and remember them partly. However the news that is going on in the papers and on TV for a few days, weeks, etc are the ones which go into the mind( register subconsciously). How come an economist knows the exact value of CAD in India and a layman does not?WHY? Because an economist is revising/re-reading these figures almost on a daily basis, but a layman isn't.

In real life we meet people, introduce ourselves but are not able to recall their names. WHY? Because we have not revised their names. If  after they tell their names, and if repeat their names a couple of times in our minds, we will not forget their names for a long time (however forget after a very long time).

In real life we eat pulses (dal), and remember their names by heart. But when we go to a new restaurant and look up at the menu, we read a few items for the first time. Now if we order a new item, and while paying bill we check the item again, the new food item gets registered in our memory (subconsciously, because read thrice already). And the items which we saw on the menu and did not revise( re-read) are immediately forgotten.

These are just a few examples to explain my point.

(REMEMBER: REVISION IS THE TERRIFIC AND SANS PAREIL WAY TO IMPROVE MEMORY)

Hence all those people having the problem of memory loss, just revise what you wish to retain, and you will remember it.

Now the final part. I have written this article and you are reading for the first time, but one thing is sure that if you would not read this article again you would forget everything in this article except the line (REMEMBER : REVISION IS THE MOST TERRIFIC AND SANS PAREIL WAY TO IMPROVE MEMORY) because you have subconsciously revised/re-read the line so many times.

Dont trust me?

Test yourself by closing this page and recalling this line without seeing it.
