ITR refund generally arises when the total tax paid by a taxpayer is more than the actual tax liability determined after considering the applicable deductions, exemptions and other provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
The excess tax may be in the form of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), Tax Collected at Source (TCS), Advance Tax or Self-Assessment Tax.
However, the refund is not credited immediately after filing the ITR. The return goes through a process before the refund is finally issued.

ITR Refund Process
The process can be understood in the following simple steps:
| Stage | What Happens |
| Collect Income Details | The taxpayer collects details of income for F.Y. 2025-26, such as salary, business or professional income, capital gains, house property income and other income. TDS/TCS details from Form 16, Form 16A, Form 26AS and AIS should also be checked. |
| File the ITR | The applicable ITR is filed under Section 139 of the Income-tax Act. If excess tax has been paid, the taxpayer can claim the refund in the ITR. |
| E-Verify the ITR | After filing, the return must be e-verified within the prescribed 30-day period. Timely verification is important for completing the return filing process. |
| Processing by CPC | After successful verification, the Income Tax Department processes the return. The information reported in the ITR and available tax credits may be checked during processing. |
| Intimation under Section 143(1) | After processing, the taxpayer receives an intimation showing the outcome, which may include a refund, additional tax payable or no further adjustment. |
| Refund Credit | If a refund is determined, it is generally credited electronically to the taxpayer's eligible and validated bank account. |
How Quickly Can an ITR Refund Be Received?
There is no fixed refund timeline that applies to every taxpayer.
With increased automation and faster processing, some straightforward ITRs may be processed and refunds may be credited within a few days of successful e-verification. In some cases, taxpayers may even receive the refund as early as the next day.
However, next-day refund is not guaranteed. The time taken depends on the processing of the individual return and other applicable checks.
Some factors that may affect the refund timeline include:
- Timely e-verification of the ITR,
- Accuracy of income and tax details,
- Reconciliation of TDS/TCS with Form 26AS and AIS,
- Deductions and exemptions claimed,
- Any mismatch or discrepancy in the information reported,
- Bank account validation, and
- Any additional verification or clarification required by the Income Tax Department.
Therefore, taxpayers should ensure that all information is correctly reported and reconciled before filing the ITR.
Interest on ITR Refund under Section 244A
Section 244A of the Income-tax Act, 1961 provides for interest on certain income tax refunds, subject to the conditions specified under the section.
Generally, interest is payable at 0.5% per month or part of a month. Where the refund arises from TDS, TCS or Advance Tax and the return is filed within the due date under Section 139(1), interest is generally calculated from 1 April of the relevant Assessment Year until the date of grant of refund, subject to the provisions of Section 244A.
The calculation may differ depending on the source of the refund and the date of filing the return. Therefore, Section 244A should be considered while determining the final amount of an ITR refund.
Conclusion
An ITR refund is not necessarily credited immediately after filing the return. The return first needs to be filed, verified and processed before the refund is determined and credited.
The overall process can be summarised as:
Collect Details -> File ITR -> E-Verify -> CPC Processing -> Section 143(1) Intimation -> Refund Credit
With faster automated processing, some taxpayers may receive their ITR refund within a few days, and in certain straightforward cases, even the next day. However, the actual timeline varies from case to case.
Taxpayers should therefore focus on accurate filing, timely e-verification, proper reconciliation of tax credits and correct bank-account details to avoid unnecessary delays in receiving their ITR refund.
