It is often said that the best medicine comes without a prescription. Among all the therapies known to humankind, laughter is perhaps the most affordable, the most contagious, and the most healing. While medicines cure the body, humour refreshes the soul. In this spirit, let us step into a light-hearted yet meaningful conversation between two doctors-Dr. Raj Jaggi, who believes in prescribing humour generously, and Dr. Ravi Khanna who carries the burden of seriousness.

Laughter Ki Dawai: A Dialogue Between Two Doctors

Act I - The Icebreaker

  • Dr. Raj Jaggi: (grinning) Ravi ji, why so serious? Your face looks like you've just diagnosed the world with an incurable disease.
  • Dr. Ravi Khanna: Raj Jaggi ji, life is serious. Patients are serious. Staff should also remain serious. This is no circus.
  • Dr. Raj Jaggi: (laughs) Ah, that's your problem! You think humour makes hospitals a circus. But humour is actually like oxygen-free, essential, and life-saving. Haven't you seen Punjabi movies? In "Gaddi Jhandi Ae Challange Maardi," the whole bus ride becomes hilarious chaos! Nobody dies of tension; they live longer because of laughter.

Act II - The Illusion of Seriousness

  • Dr. Ravi Khanna: But Raj Jaggi Ji, isn't too much humour a distraction? People who remain serious usually achieve more - productivity, efficiency, financial growth…
  • Dr. Raj Jaggi: (laughs loudly) Arre wah Ravi ji! That's the biggest illusion people live under. Many people think over-seriousness will fatten their bank account and sharpen their efficiency. But tell me honestly - have you ever seen a permanently serious man looking happy, healthy, or wealthy?
  • Dr. Ravi Khanna: (pauses) Hmm… maybe not.
  • Dr. Raj Jaggi: Exactly! Look at Punjabi cinema. In Carry On Jatta, Gippy Grewal takes life so seriously hiding secrets - aur result? Pure chaos! Meanwhile Jaswinder Bhalla just drops his legendary punch:

"Advocate Dhillon ne kaala coat aiven ni paya."and the whole theatre explodes with laughter. That one humorous line carries more weight than all the seriousness in the plot!

Or take his other gem -

"Sali gandi aulaad, na majaa na swaad."- a single dialogue, and people still repeat it years later.

Or take Jatt & Juliet - Diljit Dosanjh wins Neeru Bajwa not with a serious face or balance sheets but with innocence and humour. If he had stayed stiff and "serious," the movie would have ended in 30 minutes!

And Gaddi Jhandi Ae Challange Maardi? Trying to stay serious on that bus ride would be impossible - the humour carries you along whether you like it or not.

Now Ravi ji, tell me: do you want your life to be remembered for wrinkles of seriousness, or for lines that make generations laugh?

Dr. Ravi Khanna: (chuckling) So you mean seriousness adds wrinkles, but humour adds results?

Dr. Raj Jaggi: Bilkul! Seriousness is like driving with the handbrake on - you'll only burn fuel. Humour releases the brake, and suddenly life becomes a smooth, enjoyable ride.

Act III - Classic Inspirations

Dr. Raj Jaggi: Think of our Hindi classics. In Gol Maal, Utpal Dutt thundered:

"Gol Maal hai bhai sab Gol Maal hai!"

And audiences still laugh 40 years later. Or Padosan's "Ek Chatur Naar" jugalbandi - pure tonic for the brain. And Angoor, with double Sanjeev Kumars, shows how humour outlives generations.

Dr. Ravi Khanna: Hmm… maybe laughter really does recharge the brain.

Dr. Raj Jaggi: Of course! When humour is missing, the mind doesn't get a chance to refresh itself. And serious faces? They grow older faster.

Act IV - The Spirit of Laughter

Dr. Raj Jaggi: You know, Ravi ji, one of my all-time favourite poems captures this spirit beautifully. It's called "Haste Muskurate Jindgi Gujarey."

हँसतेमुस्करातेज़िन्दगीगुज़ारेंHaste Muskurate Jindgi Gujarey

(On the Spirit of Laughter and Positive Living)

Live life smiling and laughing,Those who have learned to live cheerfully,Those who can mend broken hearts,We should wash the feet of such noble souls,And live life as virtuous as theirs,Always smiling and laughing…

When hardships come, endure them gracefully,Always say: "Thank you, O Lord,"Don't ruin your life with complaints,Live as God keeps you,Always smiling and laughing…

Write these lessons on the notebook of your heart, Be a true servant and act with sincerity By practising this, blossom like a lotus and cross life's ocean, Live a life that shines in the world, Always smiling and laughing…

  • Dr. Ravi Khanna: (softening) Raj Jaggi ji, this is beautiful. It feels like medicine for the soul.
  • Dr. Raj Jaggi: Exactly! Charlie Chaplin once said:

"The day on which a person does not laugh, is not worth remembering."

This poem says the same in our own words.

Act V - Humour with Responsibility

Dr. Raj Jaggi: But remember, Ravi ji - humour should never wound. Don't make your staff or patients the target of poor jokes. True humour heals, never hurts.

Dr. Ravi Khanna: True. I always thought humour meant mocking someone. But you're right - it should uplift.

Dr. Raj Jaggi: Yes! And humour should flow naturally. Don't depend only on WhatsApp forwards or TV shows. If you can laugh at daily life, you'll never run out of jokes.

Act VI - The Prescription

Dr. Raj Jaggi: So, here's our final prescription for every patient:

  1. Take your medicine.
  2. Take one hearty laugh daily.

Dr. Ravi Khanna: (smiling) Twice after meals, perhaps?

Dr. Raj Jaggi: (laughing) Wah Ravi ji! Ab toh aap bhi Carry On Jatta ke hero lag rahe ho!

Dr. Raj's Top 5 Humour Prescriptions

(No expiry date, unlimited refills!)

  1. For a worried patient: "Don't worry, your blood pressure is only as high as the jokes you're missing!"
  2. For a staff member yawning during duty: "Oye, did you watch Gaddi Jhandi Ae Challange Maardi last night? Because your yawns look like you rode that bus all the way to Ludhiana!"
  3. For a child afraid of injection: "Beta, this injection is faster than Amol Palekar running from Utpal Dutt in Gol Maal! You'll laugh before you cry."
  4. For a senior citizen feeling weak: "Uncle ji, you don't need protein powder-you need punch lines! One good laugh is stronger than ten almonds."
  5. For Dr. Ravi (the serious one): "Ravi ji, a smile looks so good on you… I'll prescribe it twice a day after meals!"

Do's and Don'ts of Humour (As Agreed by Both Doctors)

Do's

  • Laugh at yourself; it shows humility.
  • Share light jokes that everyone can relate to.
  • Use humour to ease tension in tough times.
  • Encourage children and elders alike to be playful.
  • Build natural humour daily - don't depend only on outside sources.

Don'ts

  • Don't target someone's looks, status, or weaknesses.
  • Don't confuse sarcasm with humour.
  • Don't force humour in serious or sensitive contexts.
  • Don't overdo "borrowed humour" from forwards - create your own spark.

Curtain Close

The two doctors walk out together-Raj cracking another witty line, Ravi smiling for the first time in years. The hospital feels lighter, warmer, more alive.

Doctor's Final Prescription

Take one smile daily. Repeat forever. No side effects. - Dr. Raj

Because humour is not just the sunshine of the soul-it is the most powerful medicine of all.
