The Download button Instagram added to Reels saves the video with an Instagram logo and the creator's username stamped on it, bouncing around the frame for the entire clip. Screen recording gets rid of the stamp but leaves you with a blurry copy full of buttons and captions. The clean file already exists on Instagram's servers, and a copied link is all it takes to get it onto your phone or computer.
Where the Watermark on Instagram Downloads Actually Comes From
The video a creator uploads has no watermark on it. Instagram adds the logo and @username only when someone taps the built-in Download option on a Reel, so the stamp is created at the moment of download, not stored in the original.

Instagram also compresses every upload. Even a creator filming in 4K usually ends up with a Reel around 1080p on Instagram, so 1080p is the realistic ceiling for most videos you'll save.
When a downloader shows an "HD" button, it means the highest version Instagram has available for that video. It doesn't upscale anything. A tool promising to turn a 480p clip into 4K is only stretching the same pixels.
To see what you actually got, check the file. On iPhone, open the video in Photos and swipe up to see the resolution, such as 1080 × 1920. On Android, open it in your gallery and tap Details. On Phone (Android and iPhone)
Tap the paper plane share icon under the video, then tap Copy link. It's in the same spot on Reels and regular feed videos.
On Desktop
Click the video so it opens by itself, then copy the URL from the address bar. A Reel link contains /reel/ and a feed video contains /p/.
The usual mistake is copying the wrong page. A profile link (instagram.com/username) or the page for a Reel's audio track points to a list of posts, not one video, so the downloader has nothing specific to fetch.

Ask the creator first and credit them by name in the caption, because a clean file without the @username makes it look like your own work. Removing the watermark doesn't change who owns the video, and reposting it without permission or credit gives the creator grounds for a copyright complaint that can get your post taken down.
