Udyam Registration provides official MSME recognition to eligible businesses in India. Although the process is online and based on self-declaration, incorrect information can create problems during banking, tenders, government schemes and business verification.
Here are seven common mistakes applicants should avoid.

1. Using Old MSME Limits
The revised MSME limits have applied since 1 April 2025:
- Micro: Investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore
- Small: Investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore
- Medium: Investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore
Both investment and turnover must remain within the applicable limits.
2. Entering Incorrect Business Details
The business name, PAN, GSTIN, address and legal structure should match official records. Even small differences may create verification problems.
3. Selecting the Wrong NIC Code
The NIC code should correctly represent the actual manufacturing or service activity of the enterprise. Applicants may add multiple genuine activities under one registration.
4. Creating Multiple Registrations
An enterprise should normally have only one Udyam Registration. Separate registrations should not be created for every product, branch or activity operating under the same legal entity.
5. Providing Incorrect Financial Information
Applicants should not hide or change investment and turnover figures to remain within a preferred MSME category. The information should remain consistent with income-tax and GST records.
6. Confusing Private Websites With the Government Portal
The official Government Udyam Registration process is free. Private organisations may provide independent assistance, but they are not the official Government portal.
Applicants should check the website carefully before sharing Aadhaar, PAN, GSTIN or OTP details.
7. Ignoring Important Updates
Udyam Registration does not require regular renewal. However, businesses should update important changes such as their address, contact details, activities, bank information or organisation details.
Conclusion
Udyam Registration is simple, but inaccurate information can create unnecessary compliance issues. Businesses should use the current MSME limits, select the correct NIC codes and carefully verify all information before submitting the application.
