Arjun (Fictional Character): Krishna, is it true that now details of all taxpayers is available on the GSTN portal?

Krishna (Fictional Character): Arjuna, yes, it is true that now a taxpayer can know all the details about his purchaser before making any purchase from his supplier. This facility might work as an information exchange module between the recipient and supplier. Taxpayers and registered persons now can search the GSTIN of any other taxpayer and view his profile in detail.

Arjun (Fictional Character): Krishna, what particulars of a taxpayer are available when you search for a GSTIN on the portal?

Way out, to find out Bogus Taxpayers

Krishna (Fictional Character): Arjuna, GSTN provides the following particulars when we search on the GST portal :

  1. State Jurisdiction
  2. Center Jurisdiction
  3. Date of registration
  4. Constitution of business
  5. Status of GSTIN (Active/Suspended/Cancelled)
  6. Taxpayer Type
  7. Annual Aggregate Turnover
  8. % of Tax Payment in cash
  9. Dealing in goods and services with HSN code
  10. Name of the Proprietor/Director(s)/Promoter(s)
  11. Nature of business activities
  12. GST return filing table (GSTR-3B, Annual Return & Audit)
  13. E-way bill history
  14. Legal and trade name
  15. Principal and additional place of business
  16. Contact details

Arjun (Fictional Character): Krishna, what is the process for viewing such details of the taxpayers or registered persons?

Krishna (Fictional Character): Arjuna, firstly, taxpayers need to login using their own credentials in the GST portal. The next step is to navigate the search tab and enter the GSTIN of taxpayers of which you want to get details.

Once you click on the search button, all the details of such a taxpayer will be available to you.

Arjun (Fictional Character): Krishna, what should the taxpayer learn from this?

Krishna (Fictional Character): Arjuna, more transparency has been brought into the GST System by introducing the "Know Your Supplier" facility. This facility will help in reducing the non-compliance by the suppliers, as if any supplier has defaulted in filing his returns, it will be shown on the portal, and the purchaser can thus make a decision to buy from that supplier or not. Of course for ITC purposes. Once this facility is made available, the taxpayers can get some basic information about the existing suppliers with whom they are doing business. The taxpayer can also get to know about a new supplier, once he goes through the supplier’s history regarding compliance with the law.
