The standard daily UPI transaction limit for Person-to-Person (P2P) transfers is ₹1 lakh per day. However, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the RBI have introduced several category-specific enhancements that allow for higher daily limits.

Basic UPI limits in 2026
| Category | Daily Limit | Examples |
| Standard | ₹1 lakh | Everyday transfers |
| Exceptions | ₹5 lakh | Medical, education, insurance, credit card, travel, IPO |
| New UPI ID (first 24h) | ₹5,000 | Any transaction after new registration |
New User Restriction
If you have newly registered a UPI ID or linked a bank account then for the first 24 hours you can only do UPI transactions up to ₹5,000.
PF withdrawal & UPI from 2026
From March 2026, EPF withdrawal is expected to be allowed directly through UPI, so that PF money can be received straight into a UPI-linked bank account.
Business UPI Receipt Limits
For business persons receiving payments via QR code:
- For Goods sales: Exceeding annual turnover ₹40 lakh then GST registration is mandatory.
- For Services: GST registration is compulsory if ₹20 lakh annual receipts through any mode including UPI
No cash for UPI
Never accept UPI payments for cash from someone. Such UPI credits appearing in your bank account will be treated as your income, and if repeated or high-value, can cause income tax scrutiny.
Loans through UPI
If thinking to give a loan to a friend/relative via UPI from a particular bank account, try to ensure the repayment also comes back to the same bank account.
Using multiple UPI apps and multiple linked accounts for the same loan may creates reconciliation problems and can complicate ITR filing or explanation to tax authorities.
Gifts Via UPI
Gifts from non-relatives received via UPI are tax-free up to ₹50,000 annually. If exceeds ₹50,000 in a year from a person are taxable as "income from other sources". Any amount received from specified relatives (such as parents, spouse, siblings, etc.) is not taxable as gift, even if received through UPI.
On the occasion of marriage, UPI gifts received by the bride/groom are not taxable, even if the amount exceeds ₹50,000.
Updated UPI Operational Guidelines
You can check bank balance up to 50 times per day per UPI app but exceeding this limit balance checks are blocked for 24 hours on that app.
You can link or fetch up to 25 bank accounts per day per UPI app using your mobile number.
For a pending transaction, you can check the status only 3 times with a mandatory 90-second gap between each attempt.
Auto-debits (EMIs, SIPs, subscriptions) will run only during non-peak hours - Before 10:00 a.m. and After 9:30 p.m.
