What is the Elijah Watt Sells Award?

AICPA grants the Elijah Watt Sells Award every year to top scorers in the US CPA exams to recognize their outstanding performance. The award is named after Elijah Watt Sells, one of the first CPAs in the US. To be eligible for the award, a candidate must meet the following two requirements,

• Clear all Four Sections of the US CPA exam on the first attempt
• Score a cumulative average of above 95.5 across all the four sections of the exam

Kavneet Hanspal's Background

Kavneet Hanspal is a B.Com graduate and a CA-inter. He took a break from his CA preparation after clearing CA-inter and decided to shift his focus to US CPA.

Through his valiant efforts and Simandhar's guidance, Kavneet registered scores of 99 in BEC, 97 in REG, 96 in FAR, and 93 in AUD, with a cumulative average score of 96.25. He is the honorary recipient of the Elijah Watts Sells Award 2021 for his outstanding performance in the CPA exams.

While he was pursuing CPA, he was placed in BDO as Audit Assistant by Simandhar. After completing his US CPA, Simandhar placed him in EY where he is currently working as an Advanced Analyst.

In an exclusive interview with Simandhar, Kavneet credited his success to the guidance from Simandhar faculties and emotional support from his family. He also revealed his CPA preparation strategy and shared his top 10 study tips to ace the exam.

1. Choose the section that you feel most comfortable or confident first. This will motivate you and keep your confidence levels up.
2. BEC section is easy but you have to prepare well to score good marks.
3. IT section is broad - Watch YouTube videos and answer questions in Simandhar's BEC telegram group to improve subject knowledge.
4. Use the same format with one or two sentences relating to the question for Written Communications. Keywords play an important role in Written Communication questions.
5. Attend the lectures conducted by Simandhar faculties without missing them and clear your queries immediately.
6. Prepare using Simandhar materials.
7. Do at least 2 rounds of revision.
8. Attend unlimited practice tests and figure out your weak areas. Watch lectures and give special attention to the weak areas.
9. Before the day of the exam, read the book again. It will refresh your memory.
10. Attending MCQs you know first in the exam and give more time to questions you don't know properly.

Kavneet followed the above-specified strategy to make his way to one of the top-scorers in the CPA exam.
