The Income Tax Department has issued an urgent warning to taxpayers, cautioning them against fraudulent calls and messages related to income tax refunds. Scammers are impersonating tax authorities to deceive individuals into revealing their bank details and personal information, leading to financial losses.

Common Scam Alert: Fake Refund Messages
Fraudsters are sending messages similar to the following:
"You have been approved an Income Tax Refund of ₹15,000/-, the amount will be credited to your account shortly. Please verify your account number 5XXXXX6777. If this is not correct, please update your bank account information by visiting the link below: https://bit.ly/20wpUUX"
The Income Tax Department has confirmed that it never sends such pop-up messages or directs users to third-party links for verification. All legitimate tax-related communication is conducted only through the official Income Tax portal.
Real-Life Fraud Case: ₹1.5 Lakh Stolen
According to the department, a taxpayer lost ₹1.5 lakh after clicking on a fake income tax refund message. The victim was redirected to a fraudulent app, which compromised his banking details, leading to unauthorized transactions.
How to Protect Yourself from Tax Scams
- Verify Websites: Always check if the website URL starts with https:// and belongs to incometax.gov.in before entering any personal details.
- Avoid Suspicious Links: Do not click on unknown links sent via SMS, email, or WhatsApp claiming to offer tax refunds.
- No Phone Calls for Payments: The IT department never calls taxpayers to demand immediate payments. Treat such calls as fraudulent and report them immediately.
- Use Official Communication Channels: Enter tax details only on the official Income Tax e-filing portal to ensure security.
