GST Refunds Rise Sharply

One of the notable features of the August 2026 GST data is the significant increase in refunds.

Total GST refunds during the month amounted to Rs 31,795 crore, compared with Rs 18,935 crore in August 2025. This represents a substantial 67.9% increase.

Domestic refunds rose 72.6% to Rs 18,490 crore, while export GST refunds processed through ICEGATE increased 61.8% to Rs 13,305 crore.

Net GST Revenue Increases 8.3%

After accounting for refunds, net GST revenue stood at Rs 1,68,057 crore in August 2026, compared with Rs 1,55,181 crore in August 2025.

This translates into an 8.3% year-on-year increase.

Net domestic revenue increased 3.4% to Rs 1,18,759 crore, while net customs GST revenue rose 22.3% to Rs 49,299 crore.

Cumulatively, net GST revenue for April-August 2026 reached Rs 8,89,523 crore, up 9% from Rs 8,15,939 crore in the corresponding period of 2025-26.

State-Wise GST Collections: Assam Records Strong Growth

The state-wise data presents a mixed picture, with several states recording double-digit growth while some reported a decline.

Assam recorded one of the sharpest increases, with GST revenue rising from Rs 1,403 crore in August 2025 to Rs 3,679 crore in August 2026, a growth of 162%.

Among other major states, Uttar Pradesh recorded 19% growth, Gujarat 15%, Karnataka 13%, Kerala 13%, Punjab 12%, Haryana 12%, Telangana 16% and Delhi 10%.

At the same time, some states saw their GST revenue decline. Himachal Pradesh recorded a 23% fall, Sikkim declined 63%, Meghalaya fell 21%, while Andhra Pradesh and Odisha recorded declines of 7% each.

Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka Remain Major Contributors

The state-level data also highlights the continued importance of major economic states in GST collections.

For April-August 2026, post-settlement SGST for Maharashtra stood at Rs 92,334 crore , while Gujarat recorded Rs 41,627 crore and Karnataka Rs 42,759 crore.

Uttar Pradesh recorded post-settlement SGST of Rs 41,327 crore during the same period.

GST Base Continues to Expand

The report also provides details of GST registrations across states and Union Territories as of August 31, 2026.

The number of GSTINs stood at 96,85,707 in the latest period, compared with 73,16,526 in the corresponding earlier period reflected in the report. The data indicates continued expansion of the registered taxpayer base across several states.

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are among the states with a particularly large number of GST registrations.

What the August GST Numbers Indicate

The August 2026 GST figures point towards continued strength in India's indirect tax collections. Gross revenue grew at a faster pace than net revenue, largely because refunds increased significantly during the month.

The 14.8% growth in gross GST collections, combined with an 11% cumulative growth during April-August, indicates that GST revenue remains on a firm growth trajectory. At the same time, the sharp increase in refunds highlights the importance of looking at both gross and net collections when assessing GST revenue performance.

The government has clarified that the figures are provisional, and the actual numbers may vary slightly after finalisation.
