ESIC has relaxed contributory conditions for sickness and maternity benefits, especially for insured women and those affected by COVID-19 related lockdowns. They are also expanding medical infrastructure with new hospital constructions and an ICU.
Insured women who have availed maternity benefit will now qualify for sickness benefit even if they haven't met the full 78-day contribution period, provided contributions were paid for at least half the working days in a shorter period. This is effective from 20.01.2017.
For the benefit period of January to June 2021, ESIC has relaxed contribution requirements. Insured women need 35 days of payable contributions in the preceding two periods for maternity benefit. Eligibility for sickness benefit depends on contributions in the previous period or half the working days during the April-September 2020 contribution period for newer appointees.
ESIC plans to construct a 300-bedded hospital with 50 super-specialty beds in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, and a 350-bedded hospital with an additional 50-bedded SST wing in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
A Negative Pressure ICU is being established at the ESIC Super Specialty Hospital & Medical College in Hyderabad to reduce infection transmission to healthcare workers and prevent secondary infections among other critically ill patients.
