Taking a leaf from the management schools, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is all set to include case studies as part of its agenda to test the application skills of the students. The institute also plans to offer accounting technician courses to the middle east countries.

"We will re-orient the examination system for Chartered Accountancy (CA) students in a manner that can test the application skills of the students. We will include case studies, where the students will be asked to apply what they have studied. This is to eliminate the mug-up system and correct the balance by putting more emphasis on intelligent and efficient application of knowledge acquired by the students, who have always been good in theory. While we have partly implemented this change in the current year, we will revise the study module and bring out practice manuals by the end of this month," Amarjit Chopra, president, ICAI said during a press conference in Ahmedabad today.

The institute has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi for setting up an institute for accounting technician course. "We have signed an MoU for setting up accounting technician institution in Abu Dhabi and providing the course in Dubai and Muscat," Chopra said.

The Ahmedabad Branch of ICAI and its members have offered to become the knowledge partner of the government of Gujarat and render immense services in multi-faceted areas of various projects undertaken by the government. "We are keen to become the partner in growth of the state by bringing in financial discipline through offering to conduct accrual accounting in various areas. We met Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi today and he is favourably inclined for the same. We also want to be part of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) for training of various financial courses," Chopra added. ICAI is one of anchor investors who had earlier expressed willingness to take up space in GIFT as part of an MoU signed in 2007.

The institute is also planning to start its own coaching classes in a bid to save time and money of students pursuing the CA programme. The coaching would be provided by the faculty members through virtual and physical medium. ICAI plans to use its five regional headquarters and 127 branches to impart coaching to its CA students. "The idea is to help reduce stress on students who are towards completing their articleship along with their studies. And we plan to subsidise the charges for the students, say, if a private tutor charges Rs 30,000, we will charge Rs 10,000," Chopra said.

As part of its information technology (IT) initiative, the institute is also working towards making all the forms available online and facilitate more virtual classrooms. The institute has also launched an e-library for making the accounting and auditing standards available online.

In order to enable the government to meet the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) deadline, ICAI will organise one or two day workshops at 55 centres across the country beginning April 29. Under an agreement signed with Central Bureau of Excise and Customs (CBEC), ICAI will provide facilitation centres across the country for e-filing of returns and documents to the central excise and service tax assesses.

The institute has 6.20 lakh students on roll today.

Its great decision.... that they are trying to make learning lively.. Its happening all over the world. Its nice to learn in case study mode. One gets to know how to apply it... This is required. ICAI should implement this as soon as possible.

I am sorry this decision may hurt many people who are against this decision.. But friends this is the way how things can be learnt easily and conceptually...

Well thats all great I can say................

As we all know ICAI's history in its management against students; this will be a hallf baked effort; started by a president and forgotten by his successor. ICAI needs a complete overhaul; not some puny changes just for an eyewash.

Ok. let's consider some scenarios. Suppose; i am an article having exposure only in statutory audit, and Income Tax(most common profile for articles).

1. Costing and finance: 200 marks; how my articleship will help me in solving the case studies of this subject. May be , making slips for conveyance of petrol

2. Audit: Case studies here are essential and welcome. Wont be a problem to any student( genuine or dummy)

3. Law: How my articleship will help me to counter questions on case study of FEMA or Money-laundering act? Yeh word toh maine office me bhi nahi sunaaa :(

4. DT: very much welcome. We file returns. Case studies relating to computations will be easier for genuine students. Rest of the topics will be same for genuine and dummies; as both haven't got exposure in things like Scrutiny;Block assessment, Raid, appealing, etc.

5.IDT: Excise and Customs ka esposure toh usually CA banne ke baad kisi bade CA k andar kaam karne se milta hain. May be only 0.05% of articleship may be getting practical exposure to this fields. They carry at least 60 marks. How will my tickaa-type articleship help me in solving such case studies.

aaaah, i get it. My boss always shouts at me as well as his assistant accountant; when i may be drifting towards a siesta in this blistering april heat; so that will help me in waking whole night during exam days. I get it, President Chopra

6. Accounts: Some help for genuine students. Otherwise, not much different.

There fore, as per me, changing question format is welcome. But saying that this will give total advantage to genuine students over dummy is balderdash. Aajkal ke dummy rankers; jaroor ek saal jitna regular articleship karte hain. 2 saal dummy karte hain,, exam ke liye. Most of genuines have only clerical work or manual work.

@ Jose.    I know you are a great critic of ICAI.. Your max. forums are full of criticism.. Its good....

But let the scheme be first implemented and then Kindly criticise openly about its content...   Dont mind if you felt bad....:) Keep on learning new things with an open mind...  There are ample lot of opportunities..

All the best... and Cheers!!

Faiz miyaa; why should i feel bad? You are a IPCC student and i am a CA final student from pcc stream. Like you, i was also overexcited before i joined CA course. Now u can analyse my mood by my posts. ICAI gadhon se bhare hain. Pehle CPT laaya; because of that; we got articleship into rotten firms with no proper exposure. And now there's no transfer. Secondment is worthless and usually CAs don't give such thing. They would rather kick artcles out of office. And they talk about case studies .

Articleship ke 3 mahine baad; u will start understanding what i am saying bro.

All the best.

@ Jose.  Its nice to hear that you are from Final .... I have also seen the hardship faced by articles student.. I have worked as an employee in an Auditor office and i knw whats going on..  I am against Dummy articles , but dont worry they suffer when they enter corporate world.. So a kind advice to all Dummies, to stop your dummyship and start learning...

But you and me being  CA students lets not forget that we are going to  beThinking server of any organisation...  For that, be ready to learn from whatever be the source. Opportunity always knocks silently, its we who have to grab it and learn it....  Since we are into CA one should be atleast that smart to search for a firm where one get a good exposure...  just a little smartness is required to take such decision.. We as a CA should think always" How things are to be done or how anything is to be achieved ethically"  rather than crying over what we see in front of us...

I am sorry to use some harsh lines but thats the harsh reality
