The government will discontinue all existing ITR forms (ITR 1 to 7) from 1st April 2026.
After 31st March 2026, old forms will no longer be available or valid for income tax filing.
The change is part of a major reform announced by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
The CBDT will be releasing new ITR forms and rules in January 2026.

Taxpayers will have three months (January - March), to familiarize themselves and learn the new system before filing deadlines begin in April.
The new Income Tax Act 2025 will replace the Income Tax Act 1961 w.e.f 1st April 2026.
The old law will remain valid until 31st March 2026, and the transition will take place from the next financial year.
Parliament has already passed the new Act, awaiting full implementation alongside new rules and forms.
Simplified Processes and Structure
New forms will be designed more simple and user-friendly, focusing on clarity and ease of filing for the average taxpayer.
Not only ITR forms but also quarterly TDS return forms will undergo restructuring for simplicity.
Preparation by the Tax Department
The IT Department is updating its systems and training officers for the implementation of the new law.
All form redesign work and system upgrades according to the new law are ongoing to ensure smooth transition post-January 2026.
The main aim is to avoid the kinds of technical glitches experienced during earlier portal migrations.
Conclusion
This reform is one of the biggest overhauls to India's tax compliance framework in decades, focused on simplifying procedures, removing outdated legal complexities and building a more robust and taxpayer-friendly system.
