Lok Sabha Passes Finance Bill 2026 with 32 Amendments

The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Finance Bill, 2026, by a voice vote, marking a crucial milestone in the Union Budget approval process. The passage came after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman replied to the discussion in the House.

With the approval of the Finance Bill along with 32 government amendments, the Lower House has now completed its role in the budgetary process. The Bill will next be taken up for consideration in the Rajya Sabha.

Key Legislative Developments in Parliament

  • In the Upper House, the Central Armed Police Force (General Administration) Bill, 2026, was introduced on the same day. The Rajya Sabha has allocated eight hours for its introduction and detailed discussion.
  • Additionally, the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, is listed for consideration and passage. The Bill had already been cleared by the Lok Sabha on March 24 through a voice vote, amid an Opposition walkout.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai introduced an amendment Bill to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) in the Lok Sabha. After a brief debate, the motion was put to a vote by presiding officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti and was passed by voice vote.

Budget Session May End Early Amid Upcoming Elections

The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Lok Sabha has discussed the possibility of concluding the ongoing Budget Session earlier than scheduled. The move comes in view of the upcoming Assembly elections in states like Assam, Kerala and Puducherry.

Sources indicate that Parliament may adjourn by March 28 and reconvene after the elections conclude by the end of April. The second phase of the Budget Session, which began on March 9, is otherwise scheduled to continue until April 2.
