Since 2020, GST intelligence has detected fake Input Tax Credit (ITC) evasion amounting to Rs 1,20,000 crore (Rs 1.2 trillion).

The current special drive, which began on 16th August 2024, focuses on identifying and weeding out fake GST registrations to ensure deterrence.

The conference was attended by senior officers from the Department of Revenue, CBIC, Commissioners of Commercial Tax (CCT) and GST Enforcement Chiefs of the States, CEO and officers of GSTN, as well as representatives from other enforcement and intelligence authorities.

The Revenue Secretary stressed the importance of maintaining a fine balance between enforcement actions and ease of doing business, while urging focus on real evasion.

GSTN presented various technological initiatives aimed at tackling evasion while ensuring business facilitation is not hampered. Additionally, the GST Enforcement Management System (GEMS) is being used in Maharashtra for transparency and recovery of evaded taxes.

As part of efforts to disrupt syndicates operating across the country, 170 masterminds of fake ITC have been apprehended.
