A fresh political controversy has erupted on social media after senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil alleged that Chartered Accountants (CAs) play a significant role in facilitating tax evasion and that the government is shielding those involved from action.
In a statement that quickly gained attention on X (formerly Twitter), Gohil claimed that Income Tax officers have acknowledged the involvement of certain Chartered Accountants in tax evasion cases and have recommended action against them. However, he alleged that no meaningful action has been taken because such individuals are being protected by those in power.

What Did Shaktisinh Gohil Say?
According to Gohil, tax evasion schemes often involve professional assistance, and Chartered Accountants have a "major hand" in some of these cases. He further alleged that despite concerns raised by tax officials, directions for action against the professionals involved have not come from higher authorities.
The Congress leader also referred to observations made by judicial forums regarding the adverse impact of tax evasion on the country's economy. He argued that unaccounted money weakens economic growth, reduces government revenue and can ultimately affect national interests.
Social Media Reactions Divided
The remarks triggered a sharp debate among tax professionals, Chartered Accountants, lawyers and political commentators on social media.
Many CAs objected to the broad characterization of the profession, arguing that the overwhelming majority of Chartered Accountants work within the framework of the law and play a crucial role in ensuring tax compliance, audits and financial transparency. Several professionals pointed out that tax evasion is committed by taxpayers and businesses, while advisers can only be held accountable where there is evidence of active involvement in illegal activities.
Others argued that professionals found knowingly assisting in fraudulent tax schemes should face strict action under existing laws and professional misconduct regulations.

लेकिन 'ऊपर' से ऐसी किसी भी कार्रवाई के आदेश नहीं दिए गए, क्योंकि ये उन्हीं की 'C टीम' है।

ICAI's Regulatory Framework
The accounting profession in India is regulated by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), which has disciplinary mechanisms to deal with cases of professional misconduct. Chartered Accountants found guilty of unethical conduct can face penalties ranging from reprimands and fines to suspension or removal from membership rolls.
Experts note that while individual professionals may occasionally face allegations in tax fraud cases, attributing tax evasion to an entire profession remains a contentious issue.
Larger Debate on Accountability
The controversy has once again highlighted the broader debate around accountability in tax evasion cases. While enforcement agencies increasingly rely on technology-driven scrutiny and data analytics to detect undisclosed income, questions continue to be raised about the role of intermediaries, advisers and facilitators in complex tax avoidance and evasion schemes.
As political parties trade allegations over financial transparency and tax compliance, the discussion is likely to continue both within professional circles and on social media platforms in the coming days.
