FAQ :
The purpose is to appraise and approve Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSSs) and Central Sector Schemes (CSs) for their continuation over the next five years, ensuring effective use of public funds.
The new five-year cycle will commence on 1st April 2026.
The workshop was chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, Dr T.V. Somanathan.
The government's policy, articulated in the 2016 Union Budget, states that every scheme will have a sunset date and an outcome review to improve public expenditure quality.
The Development Monitoring Evaluation Organisation (DMEO) in NITI Aayog evaluates CSSs, while third-party agencies selected by the concerned Ministries evaluate CSs.
For Central Sector Schemes (CSs), the Government of India bears 100% of the cost. For Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSSs), the expenditure is shared between the central and state governments in a predefined ratio.
