In my view, the proposition requires to be examined more closely. rather incisively ; not superficially or iimpulsively.
Ideally speaking, the better view will be, - for a real and true sucess in life, one should proceed on the premise that,;
1. 'ability' and 'character' are not two concepts, which need to be 'differenced'/ 'distanced' inter se; and
2. 'ability', unless strongly/firmly founded on 'character', 'ability' might turn out to prove a 'useless tinsel'.
In other words, if 'character' is what 'foundation' to a 'building'; 'ability' is the 'mortar and brincks' which go into the consttruction of a building - a strong and long lasting one at that.
