If we consider the question "as is" word by word basis then YES the amount received will be taxed in father`s hand BECAUSE your question depicts as if the " father " received the gift on occasion of son`s marriage not the son ... so to qualify as " tax free gift on occasion of marriage " the gift SHOULD be made to the person who is actually getting married ... not to any other relative of the bride/groom...
* Section 56(2) and relevant subsections/clauses applicable in gifts received from relatives and GIFTS received on marriage occasion (from relative/non relative) .
