This discussion clarifies HRA claim eligibility for the financial year 2022-23. A relative working in a public sector organisation, receiving annual HRA of Rs. 91,000 and paying Rs. 7,500 monthly rent to her parents, can claim HRA exemption. The exemption is calculated based on the lowest of three factors: actual HRA received, a percentage of salary (50% for metro, 40% for non-metro cities), or rent paid minus 10% of basic salary. Rent receipts are the primary documents required.

You can claim HRA exemption on the lowest of the three:
The amount of HRA your employer, pays you.
If you live in a metro city, 50% of your salary is eligible for HRA deduction. If you live in a non-metro city, 40% of your salary is eligible for HRA deduction.
10% of your basic pay minus the total rent you pay.
You can submit your rent receipts to the employer.
