Negotiation skill is one of the most useful skill that everyone needs in personal and professional life. Imagine, when you as a kid used to negotiate for a candy or day off (new age kids negotiate for iphone) and today as an executive in boardroom negotiating for a business acquisition or negotiating for your salary with HR.

There is extreme of negotiations mentioned in book named "Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It" written by former FBI negotiator, Chris Voss. The author has shared his experiences of talking with criminals and hostage-takers to explain the techniques of negotiations which can be translated into our lives. I could relate with many points mentioned in the book with my experience of leading negotiations. My favorite pick from the book is "He who has learned to disagree without being disagreeable has discovered the valuable secret of negotiation".

 

If your job profile requires you to negotiate extensively, you should read the book to get some handy and valuable techniques (some people have posted summary and checklist based on learnings from the book on internet).

Any point supported with data and keeping long-term relationship in mind has worth to put on table using techniques suggested in books.
