Making 2012 your 'Annus Mirabilis'

Another New Year has dawned with new hopes, aspirations and expectations.

2012 could be a career defining year for some, for others it could be an year where  they may be taking on some really tough exams. Whatever be it, 2012 is an year we look forward to correct those areas where we erred and those areas that we wish to improve upon.

I think if we keep a few things in mind maybe we can make 2012 our annus mirabilis- an year of wonders.

1. Having a  positive attitude.

When I think about attitude, what comes to my mind is the story of a man who sold helium filled baloons. The kids thronged to buy them. Whenever the business was slow, he let loose a baloon into the air and the rising baloon brought new kids to him.

One day, he felt someone tugging at his jacket. He turned around and saw a little boy who asked, "If you release a black balloon, would that also fly?" Moved by the boy's concern, the man replied with empathy, "Son, it is not the colour of the balloon, it is what is inside that makes it go up."

The same thing applies to our lives. It is what is inside that counts. And that thing is called attitude.

We need to be positive come what may.

2. Systematic study

As students its very important that we spend sufficient time for studies. As we all know, merely spending long hours in front of the books won't work. A systematic plan should be worked out and needs to be well executed.

I remember the CA Final topper of May 2011 revealing that she spent time on each subject every day. She said that its systematic study that helped her achieve what she achieved.

And as students, its certain that exams are going to come our way. With proper preparations we can equip ourselves to tackle the exams better.

3. Equiping ourselves with the required tools

With many set to enter into jobs, its necessary that we have the required tools to battle the outside world. We live in a  world of Competition. The motto here is "Survival of the Fittest." But not all are fit enough to survive.

Recently I came to know that many fresh professionals find themselves unemployed. Its a sad fact, given the loads of hardwork they have put in.

Even nature itself has its tale to say. I like to share this with you:

We are all familiar with that big animal, the giraffe. A mama giraffe gives birth to a baby giraffe, standing. All of a sudden, the baby falls on a hard surface from the cushion of mama's womb, and sits on the ground. The first thing mama does is to get behind the baby and give him a hard kick. The baby gets up, but his legs are weak and wobbly and the baby falls down. Mama goes behind again and gives him one more kick. The baby gets up but sits down again. Mama keeps kicking till the baby gets on its feet and starts moving. Why? Because mama knows that the only chance of survival for the baby in the jungle is to get on its feet. Otherwise it will be eaten up by wildcats and become dead meat.

Let me end with Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam's words

“Dream, Dream Dream
 Dreams transform into thoughts
 And thoughts result in action.”

I would like to wish all readers a very prosperous year ahead.
