Reserve Bank of India introduces the RBI-Digital Payments Index

The RBI-DPI is a composite index constructed by the Reserve Bank of India to measure the extent of digitisation of payments in the country.

The RBI-DPI comprises five broad parameters: Payment Enablers (25%), Payment Infrastructure – Demand-side factors (10%), Payment Infrastructure – Supply-side factors (15%), Payment Performance (45%), and Consumer Centricity (5%).

The RBI-DPI has been constructed with March 2018 as the base period, with a DPI score of 100 for that month.

The DPI score was 153.47 for March 2019 and 207.84 for March 2020, indicating substantial growth in digital payments.

Going forward, the RBI-DPI will be published on the RBI's website on a semi-annual basis from March 2021 onwards, with a four-month lag.
