PMMY is a scheme launched on 8th April 2015 to facilitate easy, collateral-free micro credit of up to ₹10 lakh to non-corporate, non-farm small and micro entrepreneurs for income-generating activities.

As of 24th March 2023, more than 40.82 crore loans have been sanctioned under the PMMY.

The total amount sanctioned under PMMY since its inception is approximately ₹23.2 lakh crore.

Approximately 68% of the loan accounts under the scheme belong to women entrepreneurs, and 51% belong to entrepreneurs from SC/ST and OBC categories.

Loans are divided into three categories: Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishore (above ₹50,000 and up to ₹5 lakh), and Tarun (above ₹5 lakh and up to ₹10 lakh).

PMMY has helped in generating large-scale employment opportunities at the grassroots level, boosted the growth of MSMEs, and contributed to the 'Make in India' programme by increasing indigenous production.
