The Chennai Bench of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal was inaugurated by Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.
The Chennai Bench of NCLAT has jurisdiction to hear appeals arising from orders passed by the NCLT benches covering Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry.
The Delhi Bench of NCLAT is now called the Principal Bench of NCLAT.
The Chennai Bench will provide major relief to companies and litigants in Southern India, reducing the need to travel to Delhi, thereby decreasing case pendency and speeding up the disposal of cases.
The NCLAT now functions with 5 courts, with 4 at the Principal Bench in New Delhi and the 5th at the newly established Chennai Bench.
Even during the lockdown, the NCLAT continued to function via video mode, adjudicating approximately 69% of cases between March 2020 and December 2020, with 985 cases filed and 681 heard and disposed of.
