CBDT Chairman Nitin Gupta Granted 9-Month Tenure Extension

Last updated: 03 October 2023

The Union government has granted a nine-month extension to Nitin Gupta, who is the Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). This extension is provided "on a contract basis," as mentioned in a circular issued by the Government of India in September.

Nitin Gupta is a senior officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), belonging to the 1986 batch, and comes from the Income-tax department. He assumed the role of CBDT Chairperson in June of the previous year.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has officially approved Nitin Gupta's re-appointment as the Chairman of the CBDT. His re-appointment is effective from October 1, 2023, until June 30, 2024, or until further orders are issued, whichever comes earlier. This extension has been granted in relaxation of the Recruitment Rules and is subject to the usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed Central Government officers, as stated in the government order.

The CBDT serves as the highest policymaking authority within the taxation department. Its leadership includes a Chairman and up to six members holding the rank of special secretary.

During Nitin Gupta's tenure as CBDT Chairman, the CBDT achieved significant success in tax collection. In the fiscal year FY23, the CBDT achieved net direct tax collections of Rs 16.61 lakh crore, marking an impressive growth of 17.63 percent compared to the previous fiscal year's collection of Rs 14.12 lakh crore.

For the FY23 financial year, the budgeted estimates (BE) for direct taxes were initially set at Rs 14.20 lakh crore but were subsequently revised upwards, with the Revised Estimates (RE) reaching Rs 16.50 lakh crore. Notably, the net direct tax collections, after accounting for refunds, exceeded the budgeted estimates (BE) by Rs 2.41 lakh crore, constituting a significant 16.97 percent surplus. Additionally, they exceeded the Revised Estimates (RE) by a modest 0.69 percent.

Furthermore, the gross collections from direct taxes for FY23 amounted to Rs 19.68 lakh crore, a substantial increase compared to the Rs 16.36 lakh crore collected in FY22, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 20.33 percent.
