Hi Guys
My view on this is not exactly student friendly. I find it a bit amusing to note that your food and telephone (????) expenses are supposed to be taken care of by the auditor's office... What is supposed to be done by yourself or your parents cannot be shifted to somebody else. Why on earth should somebody pay the articled clerk, if he or she can find a commerce grad who'll work throughout the year, without any examination leave every six months, for the same money? What about the learning part?
Stipend is a facilitator, and not the a remuneration. If articled clerks themselves are considering as cheap labour, it is a sorry state of affairs at the students front. What about the knowledge you get? What do you pay for that? Its in fact funny to note that lots of students are willing to spend thousands on coaching classes, which they won't attend fully, or spend high on outings and dinners, where they find no value, but end of raising the issue of stipends time in and time out, stating that underpaid......
Having said that, most of the audit firms in the metros definitely pay far more than the institute's recommendations. Average stipend to the IPCC passout at Chennai ranges between 4k to 7.5k.
What is also true is that some auditors offices do treat articled clerks shabbily. But I would request the student friends to be a bit more thoughtful about this subject. Focus on the learning at this age and stage, rather than on what auditor is paying or not. If he doesn't pay what is due, revolt, raise the issue upfront, rather than ruminating in public forums.
