exact meaning of ‘Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act’ means such a concerned provision will have an specified effect irrespective of whatever mentioned in Act.

I give you an example.. Directors placed by Central Govt. on Board panel (may arise in case of oppression / mismanagement ETC.) will not be liable to retire by rotation notwithstanding anything contained in Co. Act.

It means, as generally in Public Co. directors are liable to retire by rotation, but these special directors will not be liable to such provision even if it is mentioned in Co. Act.
