I have applied for PAN recently and my first name alphabet starts with "S" but the IT dept has alloted me with "K" for the Fifth Alphabet as my PAN.

Is this right or should i go for rectification?

What s ur surname.....? the fifth letter in PAN will be the starting letter of ur surname or last name

Is surname refers to father's name?

Your Surname will be Fifth Letter of your PAN.

in your case, K stands for Kandan. hence, the use of that letter.

Fifth letter of the PAN represents the Last Name of the person as applied by you.

We need to be happy that PAN has been allotted. However there is no need to rectify the PAN, unless you have given any false infomarion while applying. If by mistake you have provided wrong information, please do go ahead and get it rectified.

Another suggestion is that, it is always better if you give your full name for printing on PAN card. This would help you at the time of applying for DIN, where it is mandatory to have full name along with abbreviations of initials.

I agree you should have written your name as you say it everywhere and not based on surname and all. I know this is confusing anywayz now you cant help. Nothing wrong in having a small mistake in the card.

ur pan is correct.individual pan 5th character is first alphabet of surname.in case of companies and partnership firms, first alphabet of name is 5th word.

fourth character of the PAN must be one of the following, depending on the type of assesse:

C — Company
P — Person
H — HUF(Hindu Undivided Family)
F — Firm
A — Association of Persons (AOP)
T — AOP (Trust)
B — Body of Individuals (BOI)
L — Local Authority
J — Artificial Juridical Person
G — Government

  • The fifth character of the PAN is the first character
    • (a) of the surname / last name of the person, in the case of a "Personal" PAN card, where the fourth character is "P" or
    • (b) of the name of the Entity/ Trust/ Society/ Organisation in the case of Company/ HUF/ Firm/ AOP/ BOI/ Local Authority/ Artificial Jurdical Person/ Govt, where the fourth character is "C","H","F","A","T","B","L","J","G".
