PAN is always alphanumeric. There are 10 alphanumerics. First 5 are aplhabets then next 4 are digits and then an alphabet.

First three letters are randomly selected by the department, 4th letter indicates the status of person i.e. P indicates Individual, C indicates Company, T indicates Trust, H indicates HUF, 5th letter indicates intial letter of Person name or surname whatsoever. Then Next 4 numeric digits are randomly selected and again next aplhabet is randomly selected.
