Hi Amit, u actually hv 4 alternatives mate..

Alternative 1:Accept whatever job you are getting without considering salary(of course the job should give enough exposure as a CA). U may have to scratch around for a few years before u experience any growth in ur career. But definitely u will build ur career, but rather in a slow & steady way.

Alternative 2:Opt for higher studies or prepare for exams like civil service(I say UPSC since u hv already mentioned it). Opt for civil service only if u are really really interested..A more obvious choice is to prepare well for CAT & get into IIMs or other reputed institutes. The drawback of this alternative is that u will be in a more pathetic position if u are unable to clear civil service exams or get into a top management institute after investing 1-2 years study time for that.

Alternative 3:  Get into a job and simultaneously prepare for civil service or cat or whatever else u r planning to do. Be careful that the job u are getting into isnt too strenuous & gives u enough time to study. Invest 1 year & write the exams afterwards & see how u hv performed(dont know whether 1 year is enough for UPSC preparation..hv no idea about UPSC..if 2 years is required, take 2 years). If ur performance in the exams have been really good but still not adequate to make the cut and u strongly believe u can make it if u resign ur job & concentrate fully on studies, then resign ur job & prepare at full throttle.

Alternative 4: Get into practise. Again it will be a struggle in the initial years. U will hv to wait & be patient before u can achieve any success.

P.S.I too dont like motivatinal stuff & it doesnt work for me. But still I want to conclude by saying something motivational :)

Its a very normal thing that u are doubting ur abilities. It just shows that u are a human being-and I guess thats a gud thing: )  Even Sachin Tendulkar would have doubted his abilities after a series of failures. Its a common thing mate..

Hello Amit, These days I am inactive here but what made me to reply was that yours and mine situation are same. You might have qualified the exams with dedication but later on you aren't that passionate as it appeared from the attitude you are having now. I am not going to drop some missiles over here but just say few words. You have spent so much time with CA probably the age where fun was to be seen. Firstly just change your attitude. You are to much involved with civil service exmas. Instead if that take up this course itself and move on. Settle your career into CA. No big think to be done. Just change your thinking and stick with CA only. It isn't joke, but see the vast coverage of services which we can provide. You said you aren't having any financial woes then why nit try your hand into practice? That best I feel ever. Join a firm where you can RElearn the work and in couple of years set your own practice. It will take time to set also. Indulge in socialising professionally and create your presence in market. Join up some activities which are related to administration of Icai. Believe me, in next 8 - 10 years you would taste the real success and meaning if CA. Secondly, if you r really interested now in civil services then you shouldn't have wasted your time doing CA. It's nothing but your negativity which is compelling you take up something new and exciting which you termed it as UPSC. To interpret it simply, you have no firm plan of action. Tomorrow when you are done with this new exmas your mind would wander for New course again. You would deny this to me currently but that's the natural tendency of human brain. Psychology speaks more on this. Your plan of action- 1. Change your mindset, so many people have motivated you, guided you but you have simple found an excuse to oppose it. Wondering how? Re read your own posts. 2. Decide your strength and interest. Bank on it. 3. Explorethe firms which are already into this filed of your strengths. 4. Excel and get associated with them. Dont think if the pay. You are financially sound remember that. 5. Learn with dedication, explore yourself in that field. Excel. Enjoy. Learn how to deal the situations. 6. Set up your practice, after 2 years if dedicated learning. 7. Create market presence. Market yourself, socialise professionally to core. 8. YOU modernise the meaning of practice here. This will take time. Nothing will cone to you unless you give time and stay inspired. You want believe but I have two examples currently. One is Sir, Surendra rakecha who is enjoying fruits of his success and hardwork. Next is CA Ayush Agarwal, who is sowing seeds for his successful career.

It's great to see so many CA friends supporting a guy when in need. I think we should continue this attitude. Typically its known that CAs behave competitive among themselves unlike MBAs who network more freely. We CAs have this protective attitude about ourself and typically are not willing to share resources or opportunities with others.

This attitude itself is one of the reasons a guy like amit feels helpless. If only his CA network reach out to him and give him not only confidence but also show him the way in terms of work (whether through practise or industry), his stress will reduce.

Yesterday I happened to meet a senior member in practise who complained that many mid size companies are not interested in hiring fresh CAs. The reason - these guys will quit in a matter of 1 yr and join infosys and tcs for higher salary.  Rather they prefer taking experienced candidates in accounts dept who are non-ca.

Despite all this confidence boosting talk above, the larger picture needs to be seen. Somewhere there is expectation mismatch. CAs are perceived as expensive resources who don't stick. This attitude was not there some few years back. They used to say MBAs don't stick to one company but CA will and CAs are dedicated. Today CAs have also joined the MBA camp.

These infosys etc who use CAs to prepare BRS and AP accounting have also contributed to this sorry affair.

Ashok sir Thank you !!! I am always the one who have lot of self belief . But we have to accept that we lost our worth . Preparing BRS and passing entry are our work now . We are seen as a cost centre whereas the MBAs are profit centre . But thats true that newcomers like me should take responsibility and not get frustrated
