MY DAUGHTER RECEIVED GIFT FROM MY MOTHER IN-LAW ,A CHEQUE.
IS IT TAX FREE.

As Gift is received from lineal Ascendent and it falls under defination of relative. Therefore Gift is exempt from tax to your daughter.
