80D quries

Hi,

My father is 68 years old. My company provides group health insurance which covers my parents.

Can I claim medical expenses under section 80D?

Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies whether medical expenses for parents can be claimed under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act. Generally, if expenses are covered or reimbursed by your employer's group health insurance, you cannot claim a deduction. However, if you personally pay for medical expenses like scans, X-rays, or medicines, you may be able to claim up to Rs. 5,000 as a preventive health check-up deduction, provided the company doesn't deduct the amount from your salary for the insurance premium.

If the expense is born by the company, you cannot claim the deduction. However the amount is reimbursement from you, then you can claim deduction

These medical expenses are not covered under company health insurance.  These expenses are like scan, x-ray, medicenses.

Against these medical expenses you will only be allowed to claim Rs. 5000 as preventive health checkup.

If the company deducts amount from your salary towards group health insurance, then you can claim. even otherwise, as stated by you, scan X-ray expenses can be claimed to an extent of 5000 only if the same is paid by you
