What is GST?

Goods and Service Tax (GST) is an indirect tax that is levied on the sale of goods and services. GST was implemented in India on July 1st, 2017. It is a single tax that has replaced many indirect taxes levied by the central and state governments. Currently, there are 5 GST slabs - 0%, 5%, 12%,18% and 28% and has three components - CGST (Central GST intra-state), SGST (State GST intra-state) and IGST (Inter-state Central GST).

The implementation of the GST in India was a historical move, as it marked a significant indirect tax reform in the country. It was assumed that the amalgamation of a large number of taxes into a single tax would be advantageous in the long run. One of the most important benefits of this move was the mitigation of double taxation. The initiative aimed to pave the way for a common national market. Indian goods were also expected to be more competitive in international and domestic markets post-GST implementation.

Why getting certified in GST is the need of the hour

Tax Structure before GST

Taxation laws between the Centre and states in the country were clearly defined before GST was implemented. There were no overlaps between the fiscal powers, whatsoever. The Centre would levy tax on goods manufacture, except alcohol for consumption, narcotics, opium, etc., whereas the states had the power to charge tax on the sale of goods. The Centre levied sales tax and the service tax along with charging and collecting additional duties of customs on goods that were imported into or exported from India.

The implementation of GST made amendments to the Constitution so that the Centre and states are empowered at the same time to levy and collect GST.

Importance of GST

According to CBIC, the benefits of GST legislation include uniformity of laws across the board, greater transparency, neutrality in tax rates on various products; credit availability on interstate purchases and reduction in compliance requirements.
