The "Wrong Number" Headache: How to Fix DIN Mobile Number Errors

Every director in India needs a Director Identification Number (DIN). It's like their unique ID for company matters. Each year, directors also have to update their details through Form DIR-3 KYC. This keeps everything transparent and up-to-date.

But sometimes, a small mistake can cause a big problem: a wrong mobile number entered during the DIN application (DIR-3) or the yearly update (DIR-3 KYC). As a Company Secretary, I've seen how frustrating this can be.

The Missing Country Code Problem

Here's a common situation: You're applying for a new director's DIN. The proposed director's mobile number starts with '91'. In a moment of confusion, you might forget to add the country code, +91, before their 10-digit number in the DIR-3 form. The DIN gets approved, but later, when you try to do anything that needs a One-Time Password (OTP) from the MCA (like filing more forms), the OTP never arrives. Why? Because the system doesn't have the full, correct international number.

The Wrong Number Headache: How to Fix DIN Mobile Number Errors

This creates a roadblock. You can't complete further tasks, and the director's DIN might even become inactive.

Many people think, "I'll just refile the DIR-3 KYC with the correct number." But it's not that simple. The MCA system often pulls up the old, incorrect data. And to change the mobile number, you usually need an OTP sent to that very number, which you can't get! It's a classic "Catch-22" situation.

The Solution: Getting MCA's Help

Based on my experience and what many other professionals have found, the best way to fix this is to get help directly from the MCA's support team. Here's what works:

  1. File a Complaint on the MCA Portal: This is your first official step. Go to the MCA website and file a detailed complaint. Explain clearly that the mobile number linked to the DIN is wrong, that you can't receive OTPs, and mention the form (DIR-3 or DIR-3 KYC) where the error happened. Make sure to give the correct mobile number and your DIN. If you have any proof of the correct number (like a bill or Aadhaar card), mention that too.
  2. Call the MCA Helpline: After filing your online complaint, call the MCA helpline. Be persistent. Explain the problem again - how the director can't complete important paperwork because of this technical issue. The MCA staff, after checking your online complaint and details, can often correct the mobile number from their side (their "backend" system).

This backend fix is often needed because of the strict security rules on the MCA system. To prevent just anyone from changing important director details, some fields need strong verification. When the usual way to verify (sending an OTP to the registered number) isn't working, the MCA team can step in and make the manual change after checking your information.

Important Points for Company Secretaries and Directors

  • Double-Check Everything: Always stress the importance of providing the correct mobile number and email ID when first applying for a DIN (DIR-3). A little extra care here saves a lot of headaches later.
  • Act Fast: If you notice a mistake, deal with it right away. The longer you wait, the more complicated it can get, especially when deadlines are near.
  • Use MCA Support: Don't hesitate to use the MCA's online complaint system and helpline. It might take some patience, but it's usually the quickest way to fix these data errors.
  • Keep Records: Always keep detailed notes of your communication with the MCA: complaint numbers, dates of calls, and names of people you spoke with. This information can be very helpful if you need to follow up further.
  • DIR-6 for Other Changes: Remember, while DIR-3 KYC is for annual updates and email/mobile changes (with a fee after the initial filing), if you need to change other details like a director's name or address, you'll need to use Form DIR-6. Each form has a specific purpose.

In short, even small errors like a missing country code in a mobile number can cause big problems in corporate compliance. By understanding why this happens and knowing how to get help from the MCA, Company Secretaries can guide their clients smoothly, ensuring everything stays compliant. It shows that sometimes, the best solution is to go directly to the source of the system to fix a technical glitch.
