New Tax Payment Challans Go Live on Income Tax Portal from 1st April 2026 Under IT Act 2025

Last updated: 03 April 2026

The Income Tax Department has introduced new tax payment challans on the Income Tax e-Filing Portal, effective from April 1, 2026. This update aligns with the implementation of the Income Tax Act, 2025, marking a significant shift in how taxpayers will make payments going forward.

New Tax Payment Challans Go Live on Income Tax Portal from 1st April 2026 Under IT Act 2025

New Challan System Now Active

Taxpayers can now access the updated challans directly through the e-filing portal by following this navigation path:

e-File → e-Pay Tax → Select "Income Tax Act, 2025" → New Payment → Choose relevant option

The move is aimed at simplifying the payment process while ensuring compliance with the newly introduced tax framework.

Applicability of New vs Old Tax Regime

The department has clearly defined the applicability of both tax laws:

  • For Tax Year 2026-27 onwards: Payments must be made under the Income Tax Act, 2025
  • For periods up to AY 2026-27: Taxpayers should continue using the provisions under the Income Tax Act, 1961

This dual availability ensures a smooth transition for taxpayers managing liabilities across different financial years.

Official declaration in the Income Tax Portal is as follows

Both Payment Options Available on Portal

To avoid confusion during the transition phase, the e-filing portal will continue to support tax payments under both:

  • Income Tax Act, 2025
  • Income Tax Act, 1961

Taxpayers are advised to select the correct option based on the relevant assessment or tax year to prevent errors in filing or payment allocation.

User Manuals Released for Guidance

To assist users, the Income Tax Department has also provided detailed user manuals explaining the new challan forms and payment process. Taxpayers, professionals, and businesses are encouraged to review these resources before initiating payments.

What This Means for Taxpayers

The introduction of new challans signifies the government's ongoing push toward digitization and modernization of tax systems. While the transition may require initial familiarization, the updated system is expected to enhance efficiency, reduce errors, and improve overall compliance experience.
