ICAI Doha Chapter elects new managing committee

DOHA: Members of the Doha Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) elected the new Managing Committee for the year 2011-2012 at their recently held 30th Annual General Meeting (AGM). More than 140 members attended the meeting accompanied by their families.

CA Venkat Ramamurthy of Qatar Petroleum was elected as the Chairman. He was earlier Vice Chairman of the Chapter in 2010-2011. The other members of the new Executive Committee are CA Sheji Valiyakath as Vice Chairman, CA Kotesh Katta as Secretary, and CA Raja Gopalakrishnan as Treasurer. Other elected Committee Members are CA Hatim Hussain, CA George Isaac, CA Gaurav Kakkar and CA Rupalakshmi Setty.

Outgoing Chairman CA Girish Jain presented the Chapter’s report for the year 2010-2011 and highlighted the major achievements of the term. Members adopted the audited accounts of the Chapter. The Election officer, CA Kurian Kuriakose conducted the elections. Incoming Chairman CA Venkat Ramamurthy then addressed the members, introduced the new Executive Committee and assured the members of an exciting year ahead filled with professional and cultural events.

Prior to the conduct of the AGM, the Chapter held a seminar sponsored by Deloitte & Touche, Qatar. Mr. Midhat Salha Partner Deloitte & Touche spoke on the current IFRS environment with new changes and developments and explained its impact on Corporate and Financial Institutions.

The AGM was followed by Karaoke programme in which members and their families participated with enthusiasm. CA Venkat Ramamurthy concluded the event and thanked the members for their support to the managing committee. He appreciated the efforts put in by all the committee members for making the event successful.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is the second largest Accounting body in the world with over 150,000 members. This Institute has been established as an autonomous body under an Act of the Indian Parliament and regulates the Accountancy profession in India. The Institute has facilitated establishment of similar regulatory institutions in other countries including some of the GCC countries.The Chapter in Doha was established in the year 1981 and is the oldest among the 20 overseas chapters of the ICAI. It is affiliated to the Indian Embassy in Qatar. The current membership of the Chapter is over 250 members who hold key positions in private and public sector establishments in Qatar and are actively involved in support and development of accounting profession in Qatar. The Chapter is actively involved in enhancing and updating the professional knowledge of its members and towards this end, organises several professional lectures and seminars for its members.
