Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Announces Aadhaar Authentication for GST Seva Kendras in Andhra Pradesh to Enhance Registration Process and Security

In a significant move to streamline the Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration process and enhance security, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Thursday that biometric-based Aadhaar authentication will be implemented through GST Seva Kendras in Andhra Pradesh. The decision aims to provide a more efficient and secure platform for taxpayers in the state.

The announcement comes as part of the government's ongoing efforts to leverage technology for simplifying administrative procedures and ensuring the integrity of the GST system. Sitharaman highlighted the importance of this step in her statement, emphasizing the role it will play in facilitating a smoother registration process for businesses while strengthening the overall security of the GST framework.

The Finance Minister also provided insights into the robust economic performance of Andhra Pradesh in terms of GST collections. From April to October 2023, the state witnessed an impressive 12% annual growth in post-settlement GST proceeds. The GST revenue collected by the Tirupati Commissionerate in Andhra Pradesh stood at ₹8,264 crore in FY23, with ₹5,019 crore collected from April to September 2023 alone.

Sitharaman attributed this remarkable growth to key sectors such as the manufacture of passenger vehicles, cement, and automotive batteries. The Finance Minister made these announcements during the foundation-stone-laying ceremony of the GST Bhavan at Tirupati, underscoring the government's commitment to fostering economic development through strategic taxation initiatives.

Notably, October saw a noteworthy surge in GST collections at the national level, reaching a 10-month high of ₹1.72 lakh crore. India's overall GST collection marked a 13% year-on-year increase, making it the second-highest monthly revenue collection in the history of the GST regime. The total collection for the central and state governments in October amounted to ₹72,934 crore and ₹74,785 crore, respectively.

Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra, speaking at the event, emphasized the continued focus on addressing the grievances of taxpayers by Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) officers. The commitment to taxpayer satisfaction remains a priority as the government aims to create a more responsive and taxpayer-friendly taxation ecosystem.

This announcement reflects the government's commitment to leveraging technology and data security measures to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the GST system, ultimately contributing to the economic growth of the nation.
