In a first-of-its-kind move, the central government is leveraging real-time data from quick commerce platforms like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, BigBasket and Flipkart Minutes to ensure that brands are passing on the benefits of GST rate cuts to consumers. According to sources, this initiative involves monitoring prices daily to confirm that reduced tax rates are translating into lower retail prices and visible savings for end users.
Officials have also asked these platforms to explicitly display savings resulting from the recent GST reductions, reinforcing transparency in pricing. The move aligns with the government's goal to ensure consumers benefit from lower taxes, particularly during the ongoing festive season, when spending typically surges.

"Monitoring prices on quick commerce platforms helps because they aggregate multiple brands, making it easier to track price movements across product categories," a source familiar with the development said.
Government's Data-Driven Monitoring
The monitoring exercise follows the September 22 rollout of a simplified GST regime, which replaced the earlier multi-tier structure with two slabs - 5% and 18%. Officials from the Commerce Ministry and other departments are using digital tools and data analytics to track how price adjustments are playing out across 50 key product categories.
According to one government source, about 90% of the GST benefits have been passed on to consumers through lower prices, while "some niggling issues remain in the remaining 10%," which are being resolved in coordination with brands and retailers.
Quick Commerce: A Growing Market Barometer
The government's focus on quick commerce platforms reflects their rising influence. The sector has grown from near zero to a $7.5 billion market in just five years, delivering over 1 billion orders annually in 2025. Together, Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto handle around 45 lakh orders daily, making them an ideal barometer for price tracking and consumer sentiment.
Ensuring GST Benefits Reach Consumers
On September 29, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare revealed that the government had received over 3,000 complaints from consumers alleging that companies failed to pass on GST rate cut benefits. Departments are now using multiple mechanisms, including online data tracking to ensure compliance.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier announced that the GST rate cuts would inject Rs 2 lakh crore into the economy, benefiting over 375 essential goods and services. Officials hope this will boost consumption and support economic momentum through the festive quarter.
