Rule 8D
Proviso says, amounts added under clauses (i) and (ii) must not exceed the total expenditure claimed by assessee . What if assessee claims no expenditure ? Then, amounts under i and ii clauses must not exceed zero ?

here the total expenditure refers to all expenses i.e. including expenses pertinent and not pertinent to exempted income
