Outstanding tax demand irrevocable?

Hi,

I have a outstadning tax demand against tax returns of AY:2011-12. I could only notice it last year. 

This happened because i did not include HRA. 

Rectification request /revised return has been elapsed long time back.  

Is the only option left for me is to pay he outstanding tax?

i have submitted grievance through the incometax website but they did not provide any assistance
