Late Fees and Interest

One of my clients has not filed their GST returns since March 2026. They had also filed returns late in the past, due to which the total late fees and interest payable have accumulated to around ₹7,500 (March Month)

To reduce the late fees, can I file Nil returns for the months from April onwards and report the total sales for all these months in the last month's return? I would file the March return after paying the applicable late fees, then file Nil returns for the subsequent months and declare the entire sales amount in the final month's return.

Alternatively, is there any other legal way to reduce the late fees and interest? Please suggest the best possible solution.

Filing Nil returns for active months and clubbing sales into the final return is legally non-compliant and risky. The correct approach is to file returns sequentially for each month with accurate turnover, pay the applicable interest under Section 50 along with late fees, and check for any applicable government GST amnesty notifications to legally reduce late fee outlays.
